Extra Curricular Activities in Mathematics Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium Mathematics Education Conference Tutoring Opportunities
Each year the Department of Mathematics enters teams of three students in the National Mathematics Modeling Competition. This is a three-day marathon in which teams from colleges all over the world spend a weekend working on a math modeling problem that is, a real-life open ended situation which the teams have to formulate into a mathematical problem which they then begin to solve. Contact Dr. Andrew Ross for information on how to participate. In recent years, weve had small groups of students that have worked together to prepare for the Putnam Exam. Contact Dr. Bingwu Wang for information on how to get involved with this group of students.
Other students participate in the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Students work closely with faculty mentors on research projects and present their findings at the symposium in early spring. In previous years, research projects have focused on topics that ranged from developing fractal models to investigating spatial reasoning skills in young children. For more information contact Dr. Ken Shiskowski.
The EMU Mathematics Education Conference is jointly sponsored by Eastern Michigan University and the Michigan Council of Teacher of Mathematics and attracts over 300 students and teachers to the day long conference on the teaching of mathematics in elementary and secondary schools. Its a great opportunity for EMU students to attend presentations by leaders and innovators in math education. Contact Dr. Geraldine Green or Dr. Barbara Britton for more details.
Finally, if you are one of those students who is interested in extracurricular mathematics activities, you may also find the following interesting! The Math Den is a great study and resource area for the math majors and provides oportunities for students to get to know one another and their teachers. The Math Den is located in Room 501 Pray Harrold.
Are you interested in tutoring? Contact J-P Trias to tutor in the Math Tutoring Lab . This is an opportunity for prospective math teachers to get one-on-one teaching experience. Youll be paid for this work, and you may tutor at your own level of mathematics proficiency.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Tutor Program
is run by the Holman Learning Center.
SI tutors are students that are assigned to a particular
class. The SI tutor attends
class, holds weekly review sessions for the students and does individual
tutoring as well. If you are
