The Faculty News section is overflowing with news about what our faculty did on their summer vacations (including some incredible photos!) and how they are advancing professionally this year. We also share the news that Dr. Chris Hee will retire next year. We were all saddened to hear of Dr. Bob Bartle’s death, and we include his story here as well.

Our Alumni continue to do good work out in the real world. We have updates from a few of our former students this time and hope that other alumni will send news! Please keep in touch.

Greetings from the EMU math department! We are so pleased to share our stories with you and hope you’ll enjoy reading this newsletter for Fall Semester 2003.

Our recent Events include the Developmental Math Program receiving an Institutional Values Award. This is an honor to the program and a credit to the dedicated staff who work with developmental math students. We are also happy to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the EMU Math Lab, a place that continues to thrive!

Our Students are as busy as ever! Kevin Kingston, our Doc M Scholarship recipient for this school year, is our featured undergraduate student in this issue. We are also delighted to present a Math Department Original Short Film (by Dr. Carla Tayeh) of graduate student Sandy Becker and Dr. Ovidiu Calin solving Rubik’s Cubes! Sandy is doing her thesis research about the Rubik’s Cube, and we are sure you will enjoy this 51 second video. In addition, one of our students did an internship over the summer, and we share his story along with the others in the Our Students section.

And finally, the Math Department is pleased to unveil its new logo in the Dept News section. Here, we share the story behind the logo and its designers.

Thanks again for reading our newsletter! And, thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put this issue together. Until next time...
