Faculty Publications

This fall two of Dr. Ovidiu Calin’s books have been published.
The first is the monograph"Geometric Mechanics on Riemannian Manifolds: Applications to Partial Differential Equations" and it is published by Birkhauser.
Dr. Calin's second book was published by Wiley Custom Services and is designed as the textbook for Math 341. It is called "Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry: A Metric Approach."
Besides
this, Dr. Calin co-authored the following papers:
•Geometric Mechanics on a step 4 subRiemannian manifold, accepted, Taiwanese
Journal of Mathematics, June 2005 (with Chang, D.C)
• The Geometry on a Step 3 Grusin Model, published in Arbeitsgruppe
Partielle Differentialgleichungen und komplexe Analysis, Universitat Postdam,
Institut fur Mathematik, April 2004 (with Chang, D-C)
• Geometric mechanics on the Heisenberg group, to appear in the Bulletin
of the Institute of Mathematics, Academia Sinica, 2005 (with Chang, D-C)
• The geometry on a step 3 Grushin model, to be published in Applicable
Analysis, 2005 (with Chang, D-C)
• The geometry of a step two Grushin operator, to appear in the Proceedings
of International Conference on Complex Analysis and Dynamical Systems, (ed.
by L. Karp and L. Zalcman), Contemporary Math., Amer. Math. Soc., (2004),
(with Chang, D-C, and Greiner, P., Kannai, Y.)
• Hermite operator on the Heisenberg group, to appear in the Harmonic
Analysis, Signal Proceedings and Complexity, (ed. by D. Walnut and D. Struppa),
Birkhauser, Boston, Massachusette, (2004) D.C. (with Chang and J. Tie)
• Solving Asset Pricing Models when the Price-Dividend Function is Analystic,
accepted to Econometrica (with Athanasoulis, S., Cosimano T., Himonas A.)
Dr. Bingwu Wang (with B. S. Mordukhovich) has co–authored “Restrictive Metric Regularity in Variational Analysis,” to appear in the proceedings of the Fourth World Congress of Nonlinear Analysis.
Dr. John Curran spoke on "Adaptive Learning Among Interacting Agents in Social Systems" at the Symposium on Complexity and Advanced Analytics Applied to Business, Government and Public Policy at the University of Michigan – Dearborn on Saturday, October 23rd. His talk focused on strategies for optimizing the models that traffic engineers use as they create road maps to improve traffic flow.
Drs. Bette Warren, Chris Gardiner, Tim Carroll and Mahmoud Al-Khafaji attended the MAA Michigan section meeting at Oakland University in May 2004. Dr. Al-Khafaji spoke at the conference on “Incorporating Technical Writing in the Undergraduate Mathematics Curriculum.”
Several
members of the department are involved in the Annual Meeting of the Michigan
Council of Teachers of Mathematics on October 29 and 30 at the Renaissance
Center in Detroit.
Dr. John Ginther and Professor William Ewbank will speak
on “Math Activities to Challenge and Motivate.”
Dr. Carla Tayeh with Dr. Sally Roberts from Wayne State University
will give a talk titled, “It’s the Thought that Counts: Reflecting
on Problem Solving.”
Dr. Joanne Caniglia will give two talks, “Shadow Geometry”
and “If You Build It They Will Come.”
Dr. Barbara Leapard’s talk is titled, “C3: Calculators
in the Classroom for Making Connections.”
Dr. Geraldine Green will speak on “Teaching Measurement
in Grades 1-3.”
Shelly Walker’s talk will be on “Investigating
Fractals.”
In addition. Joanne Caniglia, Elaine Richards and Barbara
Leapard will be leading field trips to Elmwood Cemetery, The Second
Baptist Church, Charles Wright Museum of African American History, and the
Motown Museum. They’ve developed materials for integrating mathematics
into each of these field trips.
Drs.
Carla Tayeh and Barbara Britton serve as co-editors
for the problem solving feature of Teaching Children Mathematics, a feature
that encourages teachers to incorporate more problem solving in their classrooms.
They have have co-authored:
Egg Dilemma, Teaching Children Mathematics, August 2004.
Pocketful of Coins, Teaching Children Mathematics, September 2004.
Postage Due, Teaching Children Mathematics, October 2004.
Dr. Tim Carroll in collaboration with the Holman Learning Center at EMU offers a series of workshops for students on how to study for math tests including strategies to prepare for math exams. His fall workshops began again this October. Watch for more workshops in the winter semester.
Dr.
Joan Jones has updated the "Children's Literature Tutorial",
an online supplement to the 7th edition of "Mathematics for Elementary
Teachers" and added icons throughout the book identifying places when
it would be appropriate to add children's literature.
Her article, "Tips for Teaching Culturally Diverse Students" appeared
in 3 NCTM publications this summer: "Empowering the Beginning Teacher
of Mathematics in Elementary School," "Empowering the Beginning
Teacher of Mathematics in Middle School," and "Empowering the Beginning
Teacher of Mathematics in High School."
Another article by Dr. Jones, "Promoting Equity in Mathematics Education
through Effective Culturally Responsive Teaching" appeared in "Perspectives
on the Teaching of Mathematics" the 66th yearbook of NCTM, published
April 2004.
And finally, Dr. Jones is adding children’s book author to her list
of accomplishments. Her children's book "Yogamath" has been submitted
to several publishers and she is awaiting results.
