After graduating from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, Ron began teaching mathematics at Plymouth High School. Ron taught for several years, and then joined a computer firm where he was the senior instructor. He returned to public education, where he focused on computer science instruction. He returned to the University of Michigan and received a Master of Arts degree in mathematics education.

Using his experience with students, Ron has written (with MSU co-author Dr. Mary Jean Winter) several books designed to help students see the relationships between everyday phenomena and mathematics. These books include: Algebra/Exploring Linear Functions; Algebra/Exploring Non-Linear Functions; Geometry Experiments/Algebraic Connections; Probability Simulations; and Transforming Functions to Fit Data.

Ron has served education as the president of MACUL and DACTM, as well as being a board member of these organizations. For the past 10 years, Ron has been chair of the Board of Community Financial (credit union).

Ronald Joseph Carlson

Ron Carlson has over three decades experience as a mathematics and computer science instructor at the secondary and post-secondary levels, and in the private sector.
Ron reads science fiction in his free time (he is also a fan of Battlestar Galactica). He contemplates mathematical paradoxes while mowing the grass on the three acres surrounding his geodesic dome in Canton. He can often be found in the garage devising methods for defeating the evil empire of squirrels and their attacks on bird feeders.
