Dr. Gisela Ahlbrandt attended a week long seminar on cooperative learning.

Dr. Babara Leapard was promoted to associate professor and earned tenure.

Dr. Paul Howard will be on sabbatical during the winter 2006 semester. He will be studying the vector space basis theorem (Every vector space has a basis) and its relationship to the axiom of choice.

Dr. Jiuqiang Liu has been awarded a Faculty Research and Creative Activity Fellowships for the 2005-2006 school year. His research will focus on "On 2-Colorings of Hypergraphs."

Karen Holmes was granted emeritus staff status by the EMU Board of Regents at its regular meeting on March 15, 2005.

Dr. Joan Jones developed an interdisciplinary course being taught during the fall semester, 2005.

Dr. Bingwu Wang submitted his paper, “ The Fuzzy Intersection Rule in Variational Analysis with Applications” to the Journal of Mathematical Analysis Applications.

Dr. Kathy Chu is teaching an online bioinformatics course. She has put many hours into preparing the material for this course - it is an excellent course for anyone to learn how statistics are applied to the area of Bioinformatics. The course is MATH 570 - Statistical Concepts and Methods for Bioinformatics. It is an online course, scheduled in every fall semester. For more information go to: www.online.emich.edu

Rita Chattopadhyay, was recognized as an Outstanding Faculty in Supplemental Instruction at Eastern Michigan University's annual Salute to Excellence Week this past April 2005. In all, 17 individuals were honored by Holman Learning Center at its Fifth Annual Faculty and Tutor Appreciation Day. The program recognizes and rewards faculty and tutors who have displayed excellent teaching and learning strategies.

Dr. K. G. Janardan, Retired Emeritus Professor of Mathematics had his paper entitled " A Discrete Distribution Associated with a Pure Birth Process" published (September 2005) in the German Journal Statistical Papers. Another paper entitled "Integral Representation of a Distribution Associated with a Pure Birth Process" is appearing in the December issue of Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods.

Dr. Ovidiu Calin has co-authored with Mike Zeiger the textbook
Wp-Calculus - An Introduction to Formal Methods.
The book will be used in the Computer Science Department as a textbook for the graduate class
COSC 513.
Dr. Calin had four papers published over the summer:

Dr. Calin gave a series of three invited talks in the Math Department at Wayne State University about his latest results in geometry and equations.

Dr. Calin has been awarded also the Spring Summer Research Award for 2006. He will use this award to finish the book Heisenberg Manifolds and Generalizations. The book will be published by AMS, International Press.
