Our faculty continues to be active and accomplished. Dr. Walter Parry gave weekly special topics lectures this year and headlined a banner year for colloquiums and lectures given by faculty and guests. Several faculty members have been published and received awards lately. We salute all of them with articles here and also share a Q&A with longtime faculty member Dr. Paul Howard.

We are always delighted to hear from our Alumni. We share updates on some of them here and encourage others to contact the department with updates for the newsletter. We want to know what’s up with you!

And finally, the department as a whole is pleased to announce a new program in Bioinformatics and to share the results of our recent program review.

Thank you to all of the faculty, students, and alumni who contributed words and pictures to this newsletter, especially Dr. Carla Tayeh (who wrote several articles and took many photos for us to share this time). Also, a special thank you to Dr. Ovidiu Calin and graduate student Sandy Becker for countless hours of work put into this newsletter for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Enjoy!!

Our big event for the season was the Second Annual Celebration of Pi Day, held on 3/14 and organized again by Dr. Joanne Caniglia. The event was a great success and lots of fun. We include a story and a gallery of photos here.

Hello and Happy Spring! Thank you for reading our Spring 2003 issue, which highlights the people and events that shaped the early part of 2003 for the EMU math department.
We were pleased to honor many of our students at the recent Student Awards Ceremony. They were recognized for academic excellence, participation, and perseverance. We include their names and awards here, along with tales of Putnam successes, outreach activities, and profiles of two current students (Jiansu Liu and Erica Jenkins).
