The New Bioinformatics Program
The Department of Mathematics in collaboration with the Departments of Biology and Computer Science, and College of Business are developing a graduate program in Bioinformatics.
Bioinformatics is an applied, interdisciplinary field of study that integrates aspects of biology, biochemistry, mathematics and computer sciences with business and communication. “Bioinformatics professionals are involved with biomedical and genomic research and are highly demanded by many pharmaceutical companies and bioscience technology firms”, says Dr. Chu.
Drs. Kathy Chu, Rita Chattopadhyay, Chris Hee, K.G. Janardan, Jiuqiang Liu, and Bingwu Wang are developing two mathematics courses for this program; Statistical Concepts and Methods for Bioinformatics and Modeling in Bioinformatics. The courses will deal with statistical methods for analyzing high-dimensional data for biomedical research. Topics in the modeling course will include DNA arrays and genome rearrangements, in addition to data mining models.
The courses are scheduled to be offered beginning
in the fall 2003 and winter 2004. For more information on the program, please
