Science Olympiad

On March 22, 2003 over 600 middle and high school students competed at
Washtenaw Community College at the 19th Annual Regional Science Olympiad.
The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to
improving the quality of science education, creating a passion for learning
science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science and
mathematics education by both students and teachers. These goals are
accomplished through classroom activities, research, professional
development workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district,
regional, state, national and international academic interscholastic
tournaments. Seventeen math and science faculty supported the event by
supervising events. Drs. Ovidiu Calin and Joanne Caniglia participated in
this year¹s events. Huron High School (Ann Arbor) and Saline High School
will represent Region 9 at the state tournament.

Math Education Conference March 22, 2003

Over 300 current and future teachers of mathematics attended the annual spring Mathematics Education Conference at McKenny Union hosted by the Department of Mathematics and the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

The conference began around 9 am with coffee and juice in the McKenny Union Ballroom and was followed by workshops for teachers in elementary school through high school. Workshops ranged from “Fractals Meet Fibonacci” to “Spreadsheet Mathematics” to “Math and the Internet”. Between sessions, conference participants visited the book display with publications from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and enjoyed a box lunch at noon.

“The enthusiasm for teaching mathematics is contagious especially when you are surrounded by so many teachers that love teaching mathematics,“ said Dr Geraldine Green.

Dr. Barbara Britton co-chairs the conference each year with Green and looks forward to spending the day with colleagues from other universities. “The conference is a welcome opportunity to spend the day with colleagues from our neighbors at Wayne State, Madonna University, University of Michigan Dearborn, and Oakland University to as far away as Indiana University,” says Britton.

Leaders in mathematics education from Oakland Schools, Farmington Schools, Trenton Public Schools, Wayne RESA Math and Science Center, Troy School District, Utica Schools, Detroit Public Schools, Ann Arbor Public Schools, Plymouth Canton Schools, Warren Consolidated Schools, and Milan Schools spoke at the conference.
