Faculty Awards and Activities
Our faculty is always involved in a wide variety of programs and conferences. We are pleased to highlight some of their 2002-2003 activities here and to honor our recent award winners: Drs. Ovidiu Calin, Joanne Caniglia, and Carla Tayeh.
Dr. Ovidiu Calin was awarded a Provost New Faculty Research Award for his work, “Lectures on Geometric Mechanics of Riemannian and Heisenberg manifolds”. His recent publication is "Geodesics on a certain step 2 sub-Riemannian manifold," Annals of Global Analysis and Geometry 22 (2002), 317-339.
Dr. Walter Parry has two recent
publications:
"Twisted face-pairing 3-manifolds," written with James Cannon and
William Floyd, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 354 (2002),
2369-2397.
and
"Heegaard diagrams and surgery descriptions for twisted face-pairing
3-manifolds, written with James Cannon and William Floyd, Algebraic and Geometric
Topology 3
(2002), 235-285.
Dr. Joanne Caniglia was awarded a sabbatical leave for her work, “Teachers Learning Together: Investigating Effective Strategies for the Retention of Urban Teachers Through Lesson Study Methodology.”
Dr. Joan Cohen Jones spoke at the Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in San Antonio, Texas (April 9-12, 2003) on “Using Children’s Literature in Preservice Teachers Mathematics Education.”
Dr. Barbara Leapard spoke at the Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in San Antonio, Texas on “Child’s Play for Middle School Mathematics Students.”
Dr. Carla Tayeh with Dr. Sally Roberts, Wayne State University, spoke at the Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in San Antonio, Texas on “Metacognitive Journals: Thinking about Thinking.” Dr. Tayeh is also a recipient of an Academic Service-Learning Fellowship for the 2002-2003.
Dr. John Ginther and his long-time colleague Prof. William Ewbank (Taylor University) continue to offer conference sessions on school mathematics activity ideas for classroom teachers. Their appearances recently have been for the Detroit Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics last November, and for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in October. Professors. Ginther and Ewbank teamed up in1969, after a transfer student from Taylor to Eastern Michigan University noted their similarities of interests. Both have long been avid "collectors" of classroom mathematics activities, and continue to enjoy collaborating to share the activities in print and at conferences.
