Students Help Math Clubs
Math Clubs at Kaiser and Estabrook Elementary Schools
Pre-service teachers in Dr. Joanne Caniglia’s and Dr. Barbara Leapard’s elementary methods classes (MATH 381) classes are enjoying a taste of teaching mathematics in after school math clubs. Children in kindergarten through grade five at Estabrook Elementary School in the Ypsilanti Schools and Kaiser Elementary School in the Willow Run School District stay after school for an hour and a half on Tuesdays to join in fun activities that are, at the same time, conceptually rich.
Approximately 40 pre-service teachers at Estabrook
and 25 pre-service teachers at Kaiser work with small groups of 3 to 7 children.
The pre-service teachers learn how to write lesson plans using the Michigan
Benchmarks and to implement them during the one-hour club. Afterwards, they
reflect on what they have learned about the children’s abilities to
understand mathematics and on their abilities to handle working with groups
of children.
Mrs. Pat DeRossett at Estabrook and Mr. Raymond C. Mellberg at Kaiser and
their staffs have been extremely helpful in helping the math clubs to be very
successful endeavors.
