Pi Day Celebration

Our second annual Pi Day Celebration drew a crowd in the math den! Dr. Caniglia coordinated the event again and provided delicious pi(es) to eat.

Featured speakers for the event included Dr. Folk and Dr. Carroll. Folk recited 100 decimal places of pi and then impressed everyone further by being able to start his recitation of pi at many different random starting points (provided by the audience). Carroll gave a brief history of pi, including a discussion about approximating pi geometrically (as seen in the photo below).

The crowd joined in the fun for the Buffon’s Needle Competition, which surprisingly allows one to come up with an approximation of pi by dropping needles on a grid. Dr. Parry’s team won the event by coming closest to the correct value of pi.

Parry finished off the Pi Day events with a look at ways to calculate pi.

A big thank you to Dr. Caniglia and other faculty and students who made the day such a success!
